CARDINAL NEWMAN TO BE CANONISED IN ROME
Cardinal John Henry Newman will be declared a Saint by Pope Francis in Rome today (Sunday, 13th October). It’s the first canonisation for England and Wales since 1970.
Cardinal Newman was ordained a Church of England priest in 1825 and converted to Catholicism in 1845. He was made a Cardinal in 1879.
Cardinal Newman, who died in1890, was a man of great intellect, a philosopher, theologian, poet, preacher, teacher and priest, noted for his personal holiness.
A crowd of thousands will watch this great occasion in Rome, including Bishop Richard and others from our diocese. Millions more will watch around the world on television.
