YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH
The Lord Jesus says 'You are the salt of the earth' (Matt. 5:13). The usage of salt is overwhelming. There is rarely any kitchen without salt. Virtually every food is seasoned with salt. Salt was used in sacrifice by both Jews and Romans alike. Salt is a sign of hospitality that is why Mark 9:50 says, 'Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.’
To be salts of the earth also means to be a channel of peace and a witness of love. Peace goes along with forgiveness. When the Lord Jesus first appeared to His disciples in the Upper Room, He said 'Peace be with you.' He did not reprimand Peter for denying Him nor the apostles for deserting Him. He forgave them. As children of God, we are obliged to forgive. As harbinger and witness of love, we ought to be patient, kind; not to be envious nor be pretentious, or puffed up; self-seeking; not rejoicing over wickedness but rejoice with the truth; hope all things and endure all things. (1Corinthians 13:4-6).
